Work out what kind of toys your dog prefers and have a selection. Don’t leave the all the toys out, all the time. Out of sight is out of mind for your dog.

After a day or two swap over the toys which will be fresh again. . Mix it up, variety is the spice of life for dogs too.

Give the right size toys to your dog, big dogs need bigger toys. small dogs and puppies need smaller toys.

Don’t give your dog an old shoe to play with if you don’t want him to chew shoes. He can’t tell the difference between the old ones you gave him and and your new expensive ones.

Exercise you dog before you leave and if possible again when you return if you are going to be away for a number of hours. Work at training your dog or play games that will provide mental stimulation.

Exercise or train you dog outside your yard for even more variety and interest in your dogs life.

If you dog likes to chew on furniture or other household items, treat the item with something unpleasant like a commercial spray or cayenne powder. Test any treatment in an inconspicuous place for discoloration, before apply to your items.

When you catch your dog in the act, stop a chewing dog by saying “No” loudly and provide him with something suitable to chew on. If you discover the damage afterwards there is no point in punishing your dog, he won’t understand.
